Topic: Tanning/Side Effects

Angle:Why is tanning alluring to people?  Do they realize the health risks?

Script IN (for anchor):  Everyday, millions of people head to the tanning salon to achieve that bronzed skin tone.  But what they don’t realize is how much of a detriment it is to your quality of life.

Stand up:  Many students here at Eastview have their own views on tanning and what it means to them.

1st Interview:  (Sarah Faste)  Do I tan?  I do not tan because I’ve heard things about how tanning beds can give you diseases.  I don’t think being ‘tan’ is that attractive, but I can see why people would think it would be.

Segue: Sarah’s view of tanning is unique, but doesn’t relate to every other teenager.

2nd Interview:  (Chloe Burke)  To me, tanning is alluring because it is relaxing and I feel a lot prettier after.  It’s nice because I think I look a lot thinner, prettier, and healthier.

Segue:  Chloe has her heart in the right place, but doesn’t realize what a risk tanning can be.  An anonymous source tells us of her sister’s battle with skin cancer.

3rd Interview:  She first realized she had a problem when she noticed redness, spots, and changes that were kind of rough on her chest.  She got skin cancer from being out in the sun frequently and once in a while going to the tanning salon to get that bronzed, athletic look.  She knew she should got to the dermatologist to see if there was anything to be concerned about.  When she was diagnosed, she was shocked and worried.  To get rid of the cancer, they excised (cut out) the areas that were cancerous and used the Mohs procedure which is when you slice the skin off and send it to a lab to check if the skin around the outside of the affected area is free of cancerous cells.  She no longer has cancer, but every three months she has to go in to the doctors to get checked.  To this day, she stays covered up, and rarely ever wears a swimsuit because of her condition.  So really, what is the trade off?

Close:  I hope everyone realizes just how terrible this disease can be.  And only you can protect yourself from it by covering up and being prepared for sunny days.

Reporting for the Flash, I’m Maggie.
Script OUT (for anchor):  Thanks Maggie, I’ll be sure to put on my sunscreen before I go outside.

The Elephant in the Room, at a Vuitton Celebration

At a fashion show in New York, Marc Jacobs collaborated with Katie Grand to create a new fashion statement in the Louis Vuitton line.  The show was memorable due to the outlandish mannequins whose heads had been replaced with plaster replicas of Vuitton's most popular bag designs.  There were elegant decorations, and literally, a plaster Elephant in the room.  The show is fabled to be one of the best fashion shows in the recent years of NYC fashion.

Ruby Bridges

Research Ruby Bridges. Who is she? What time frame did she grow up? What is significant about her life?

Ruby Bridges was a player in the civil rights stuggle back in 1960, as only a first grader. She went to a white populated school, and faced discrimination.
She grew up in the civil rights movement era where blacks were heavily discriminated sometimes to the point of violence.  Ruby did not recieve any violence, but every day before school, mobs of white people stood outside protesting her entrance to their childrens' public school.
Even if young Ruby was not aware of it at the time, she was making a difference in the outlook of white people on integration in schools.  Eventually, parents started to allow their kids to come back into the same classroom as Ruby and other African Americans.

IN CLASS QUESTIONS:

1. What is the rule of threes/filling the silence?
You ask a person three times and the first time they give you the answer YOU want to hear, the second they explain it more, and the third they tell you exactly what happened.  The rule of silence is when there is a silence and then the person feels obligated to talk.

2. Explain the non-question question.
A non-question question is when you are starting to interview someone, but talk about things that are smaller than the subject so the person becomes comfortable with you.

Critic blasts Duluth opera's non-Indian casting of 'Pocahontas'

In Duluth's Opera they are showing the tale of 'Pocahontas: A Woman of
Two Worlds'.  This opera is widley recieved throughout the midwest due to the diversity of characters in the show and the accepting of cultures.  However, Duluth's production does not include any native americans cast as principle roles.  Many people were offended by this news because they believed that this play should involve that sprinkle of culture.  I don't think that this is a major deal because a play or 'opera' should be cast due to ability level, and not due to race.

Jonesboro

A shooting occurred in Jonesboro Arkansas one morning while students filed outside in response to a pulled fire alarm. The perpetrators were 13 year old Mitchell Johnson and 11 year old Andrew Golden. They wanted to get revenge for people that broke up with them or people they didn’t like. For this article I would probably try to see inside the minds of the two boys, figure out more about why they did it.

Breast and cervical cancer rates rising globally.

Breast cancer and cervical cancer are becoming more common in our society between the ages of 15-49.    This type of disease is based on the lifestyle of a person, but is resulting in more deaths of young women than in the middle eastern countries.

I think this is really sad because these diseases are focused on my generation/sex.  It is terrible to think that mothers are dying, and then, children do not have mothers.

Forget Your Umbrella: Opening Activity

Think ponytails are out? Well, this centuries-long trend is most definitely not. But they are out... in the rain! Fashion experts have been seeing a trend with top designers using slicked back pony tails on their models, that look as if they are wet. This look is easily achieved with smoothing serum and finishing spray. The slicked back ponytail is versatile because it is at the height of fashion and also does well in rainy weather because of the slicked back look and wetness of the finishing spray.  It is very classy, and chic.

Google plus is coming out with games.  I don't think that this is a very good idea because there are already so many ways to procrastinate on the computer.  Many video games can be addictive and are around all of us all the time, whether it's on our phones, at home on our xBox 360s or somewhere else...  they are still prevelant in our lives.  I do not believe that this change in Google+ will change peoples' facebook gaming ways, because there are still going to be people willing enough to play these games, or find/make another way for themselves to be able to have free and unsolicited access to them.  People will also find new mediums in which they can game, like on their iPads or iPods.  Google+ is not going to make gaming any better than facebook cause it still melts brains.

Summary of an Article: Seemingly Drunk Swedish Moose Found Stuck in a Tree

September 8, 2011

It was a quiet night for the family of Per Johansson.  However, it did not stay silent for long...

Johansson heard roars coming from the neighbor's backyard.  Johansson quickly ran outside to see what the ruckus was about and saw a female moose stuck in the neighbor's tree next to their garden.  Authorities suspect that the moose was drunk from eating too many fermented apples.  The moose was set free by removing tree branches.  The moose seemed happy to be down on her four feet but fell asleep in the neighbors garden for the rest of the night and in to the next day.

The Life and Times of Chloe Burke.

By Maggie Elinson

Chloe, a spunky young teenage girl, is having the time of her life in high school.  She has amazing friends, is successful in her school work, and is an advanced skier.  She shows off her creative side every day by putting her best foot forward in fashionable items and has a bright white smile on her face.  However, what people don’t know is what is about to blow up like a ticking time bomb inside of her.  The tanning obsessed girl often feels pressure to follow the strict rules made by her parents.  She is told every day to be good at school, and competitive skiing.  It’s hard for her to keep up with school because she misses so much of it due to her monthly visits to Colorado for skiing competitions.  Although she does not complain about missing this school, because of her undying love of the sport, she finds it difficult to keep up sometimes and often feels like she doesn’t make her parents’ cut.  What is remarkable about Chloe is, she never complains and always gives her all in whatever she does.  You would never be able to tell that she is under a lot stress because of the way she carries herself.  She is truly a wonderful person and does great things.  Chloe inspires us all to think about what truly having a good attitude is all about.
